CONFERENCE: THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM
In April 2004, the Foro del Sur Foundation invited the Spanish philosopher Fernando Savater to give a lecture at the Foundation's headquarters entitled “The struggle against terrorism”. Given that throughout his life he has confronted with terrorism, there are few people that could describe better than him the logic of terrorism that seeks to impose itself through fear, resorting to the extreme use of indiscriminate violence against ordinary citizens.
The conference took place within context of the savage attacks in Madrid in March of that same year, when four bombs were detonated near railway lines. For Savater, transnational networks consider that they can manage the political decisions of states and the beliefs of societies, generating terror through the mass massacres of citizens. During the conference, he explained that these networks are handled by operators who have the ability to use the conditions of each society to fatally beat defenseless citizens to finally end up, those operators, fiercely fighting each other for the monopoly of the use of force that characterizes the nation states and for that same reason constitutes a primary threat to the legitimacy of any democratic system.
