Digital Conference - The Dynamics of Conflict and Cooperation in a Changing Middle East 30/11/2021

The Foro del Sur Foundation and the ASPA Institute organized a meeting with one of the most prestigious specialists on the Middle East, PhD Paul Salem, who shared his analysis of the persistent transformations in the MENA, from the areas of cooperation to the conflict zones, as exemplified by the current events in Syria-Lebanon and Afghanistan, among others.

 

Panelist:

Ph.D. Paul Salem is President of The Middle East Institute. Prior to joining MEI, PhD. Salem was the Director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut (2013-2006), Lebanon. From 1999 to 2006, he was the General Director of the Fares Foundation, and from 1989 to 1999 he founded and directed the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, Lebanon’s leading public policy think tank. In 2002, PhD. Salem was a member of the senior review committee for the United Nations Development Program’s Arab Human Development Report.

He focuses on issues of political change, transition, and conflict as well as the regional and international relations of the Middle East. PhD. Salem is the author and editor of a number of books and reports including Escaping the Conflict Trap: Toward Ending Civil Wars in the Middle East; Winning the Battle, Losing the War: Addressing the Conditions that Fuel Armed Non State Actors; From Chaos to Cooperation: Toward Regional Order in the Middle East; Broken Orders: The Causes and Consequences of the Arab Uprisings; Thinking Arab Futures: Drivers, scenarios, and strategic choices for the Arab World;  The Recurring Rise and Fall of Political Islam; Bitter Legacy: Ideology and Politics in the Arab World and Conflict Resolution in the Arab World.
