On Friday 29th of November, the Foro del Sur Foundation together with the Woman and Government Association organized a meeting entitled “Women mayors: Overcoming obstacles”.
On that occasion, the results of the elections to local governments in Argentina over ten years and their impact on the search for greater participation of women in political spheres were analyzed. Data collection was carried out by Women and Government, and mayors invited by Foro del Sur shared their experiences in a panel moderated by Dr. Diana Maffia, Director of the Gender Observatory in Justice of the Council of the Magistracy of the City of Buenos Aires.
The truth is that the barriers that are presented to women are not always evident, which is why their inquiry becomes imperative, in order to think about the best strategies to overcome them. In the case of local governments, the low representation of women in executive positions does not arise from a legal limitation but is built on the basis of other features: social, cultural, economic and political, which are difficult to detect.
