TUCUMÁN: FIRST MEETING OF RURAL, INDIGENOUS, AND JUDICIAL WOMEN FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE IN THE POST-PANDEMIC WORLD PROGRAM 21/10/2022
On October 21 st , 2022, Rural, Indigenous and Judicial Women for Climate Justice in the Post-Pandemic World, an initiative of the Foro del Sur Foundation, held its first meeting at the Supreme Court of Justice of Tucumán, Argentina.
This was an unprecedented opportunity for 50 indigenous and rural women to discusswith officials of the Judiciary their experiences from a gender perspective regarding t he consequences of the shortage of drinking water, the great difficulties in food production conditions, and the increase in mortality rates due to floods, storms, droughts and heat waves, among other issues.
The event, which was conducted by Andrea Finkelstein - facilitator of the Negotiation and Gender Programme of the Foro del Sur Foundation -, featured a presentation by Iris Barth, a geographer graduated from Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany) with a master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. For almost 20 years, Iris has been working on climate change (mainly adaptation and mitigation) in the agricultural sector, sustainable management of natural resources, rural development and extension, planning and follow-up services based on results, and organisational development. Since 2014, she has served as consultant for INTA and international cooperative institutions.
This roundtable opened with the presence of Claudia B. Sbdar, Daniel Posse and Eleonora Rodríguez Campos, members of the Supreme Court of Justice of Tucumán; Lorena Chara, Director of the French Development Agency in Argentina (AFD); Mariano Garmendia, President of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and Marlise Ilhesca, Executive Director of the Foro del Sur Foundation.
On this occasion, Dr Sbdar pointed out that various reports claim "that women represent around 50% of the world's food production force and play a key role in small-scale food production, the preservation of biodiversity and the recovery of agro-ecological practices". With regard to the work of the Judiciary on gender and environmental issues, the judicial official said "As judges, we all face the complex task of analysing and ruling on cases from a gender perspective, as well as contributing from our position to the implementation of the principle of prevention that is at the heart of environmental law".
The initiative of the Foro del Sur Foundation is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), through the EUROCLIMA+ Fund, with the strategic collaboration of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the Association of Women Judges of Argentina (AMJA). It is also supported by the French Embassy in Argentina, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the National Government.
