International Trade and Gender in Latin America and the Caribbean: "Towards Latin America 2026: The Impact of Exports on Gender Equality" 26/8/2022

On this occasion, the Foro del Sur Foundation joined the launching of an important study developed jointly by IDB INTAL and the Labour Markets Division of the Inter-American Development Bank, which enables us to understand the transversal aspects of gender in the recovery of trade after the pandemic.

The impacts of international trade on gender gaps are influenced by the structure of markets, institutions, and existing inequalities. There are multiple interactions between gender and trade that, in addition to other intersections, require specific assessments on a case-by-case basis (UNCTAD, 2020). In this regard, evidence shows that while trade is necessary to reduce gender inequalities and enhance economic development, it does not suffice on its own.

An in-depth understanding of the impact of trade on women in their different roles as workers, entrepreneurs and consumers is essential to reflect on the mechanisms that can improve their incorporation into economic structures (IDB INTAL, 2022)1. It has been observed that greater inclusion of women in the economy can generate a major reduction of poverty, increase human capital and job creation, and have a positive impact on productivity, trade competitiveness, and economic growth (IDB, 2015; WTO, 2017; McKinsey, 2018).
